Fr Luke's talk on Lent

Summary of Father's talk:
1st part: 4 major aspects of scripture linked to the Eucharist.

Vatican II - All grace and spiritual power flows from the Mass
Eucharist is the apex (everything else comes from it)
Don't ask Priest for blessing after the Mass as you already get it from the Mass
System at Eucharist - everything is nice and neat BUT it had a very messy past

4 major aspects of scripture:
1. Genesis 15:1-18 (Yahweh's Covenant)
Take aways:
- Evidence of spilt life and spilt blood
Life is about death
Something must die so that something beautiful can happen
- God walked through split animals for us
Even if we walk away from our covenant with God, God will not
- Don't be unevenly yolked
With reference to marriage (2 Corinthians 6:14)

2. Genesis 22 (Sacrificing Isaac)
Take aways:
- Genesis 22:8 - God will provide
- Genesis 22:13 - God provided the lamb
- Genesis 22:14 - Mountain was named "The Lord Provides"

3. Exodus 7 (Plagues God sent in Egypt)
Take away:
- Yahweh is stronger than any other God!
The different plagues represented other Gods and Pharaoh. By sending the plagues in Egypt, God showed that he was stronger than all the other Gods.

4. Exodus 12:1-14 (Slaughtering of an unblemished lamb)
Take aways:
- Share the lamb (community!)
- Sacrifice must be unblemished (or clean)

2nd part: Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday

Jeremiah 31:31 - God will make a new covenant
Last supper - Jesus = new and everlasting covenant

Holy Thursday
Take aways:
- We should remain solemn till Holy Thursday
- We should be with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane by spending 1 hour with Jesus in front of the Altar of repose
- Crucifixes and statues are covered
- No Tabernacle light

Good Friday
Take aways:
- Service not Mass
- Mass of Jesus the High Priest so Priests wear red
- Veneration of the wood
- Kiss the CROSS not Jesus' feet

Fast from Good Friday to Holy Saturday to make it more meaningful.

Holy Saturday
Take aways:
- Office readings on Holy Saturday morning (after which, Father said we should all help to clean up the Church!)
- Altar is bare
- Still no Tabernacle light
- 8pm - Easter Vigil Mass- Gloria (lights go on, bells will ring, flowers come back, statues and crucifix will be uncovered)
- Alleluia (not allowed to say this throughout lent)
- Elects and Godparents pass through pews led by Jesus to the waters of Baptism
- Consecration of new bread

Celebration of Mass in 3 days.

Lamb of God - Abraham's covenant
Isaac to be sacrificed - God provided the ram that became the lamb
"Through Him, with Him, in Him" - Highest point. Jesus on Calvary. (Jesus is not THE sacrifice; we must respond to God's love)

Luke 7:36 (The woman who washed Jesus' feet with her tears and hair)
- She spared nothing to wash His feet, anointed Him before His death on Calvary.
Jesus spared nothing to show God's love for us on Calvary!

This talk on Lent has certainly helped us to deepen our knowledge of the Triduum and Lent. :) Hope these points help you to understand more too!

13 January 2008

A big big welcome to all Y1s!

Games Day started at about 2pm and everyone present had a lot of fun! Many kudos to the organisers! Volleyball and captain's ball is fun :)

Everyone gathered in Prayer Hall A/B at 430 and mingled. Some arrived late as they were caught in the pouring rain. After a short game of Indian, Pirate, Ninja and Ah Beng, we all settled down for an introduction to YC for the new Y1s.

Roy talked for a bit, introducing the Y1s and Y2s to the topics that were to be covered through the course of the year. This included topics like Professionalism and Servant Leadership, Spirituality, PnW Workshop and Scripture Study. He also raised up several important events that YC will be taking part in for the first half of the year - Blood Drive Registration on 20th and 27th Jan, and A Cross with Jesus Pilgrimage for Holy Week 2008. All who wish to help out in the Blood Drive Registration please email the YC email by Tuesday.

After the admin matters were settled, we had a mini session led by Roy, on Embracing the Lord's call. The scripture reading from John 15: 14 - 16 was followed by several questions which required us to reflect on during the quiet time allocated. Quiet time was followed by a group discussion on the reading, and how God is our friend. Many people tossed out opinions and views and it was a fruitful discussion which ended at 6pm.

All Y1s, thank you for attending our first session! Sessions will start proper on 19th Jan, please bring along your Bible and stationery for next week. For all Y2s, please bring your Bible, stationery and prayer journal! Thank you and continue checking back here!

YM Leader's Retreat

To start off the YM retreat, we had a BBQ which began after evening mass, on the 28th Dec. People were eating and chatting away. It was a good opportunity to mingle with the other youth groups in church. Each group presented a short slide-show and after which, Clement lead us in an ending prayer.

We started clearing the place up and for those who were not staying on for the retreat, left for home. The rest of us headed down to the retreat house where we started cleaning up the place, and after a quick shower, we were briefed on the rules of the camp.

We were up by 8am the next morning and went down to the meals room to have our breakfast. By 9am, our retreat facilitators, Edwina, Petrine and Claire had arrived. We went in, in twos and started the walk of the Canticle of Creation in the conference room. There, we witnessed the the beginning of creation to life in the present- all written down in words, with soft music playing in the background. In pairs, we then reflected for a short while about our thoughts and feelings while walking through the Cosmic Path. Following which, one person from the pair will share what was discussed with the rest.

For the next activity, each of us were given a string, with both ends of the string coloured. The objective of the activity was to find the person who has the other same-coloured end of the string and connect it. We ended up in a circle and tasked to share something about ourselves to the people sitting directly beside us. I guess it goes to show that each of us are vital to the YM and that things would not come full circle if there was just one missing. After the short exchange, we were asked by Edwina to share about how we experienced the person whom we had a short exchange with. There were many positive replies about the different people.

After lunch, we each decorated a piece of paper of different sizes, and pieced all of them together. It was somewhat like a jigsaw and we later stood on the part of the paper which we had decorated our names, and each of us affirmed each other by saying thanks. Dinner came, and after which, we washed each other's feet as an act of reconciliation or as a re-affirmation of friendship.

At 8.30am on 30th Dec, we had morning prayer in the form of yoga. After the morning prayer then came our breakfast. For our morning session, we reflected on our feelings from the past, the older members reflected on the problems faced in starting a new youth group, to the newer members reflecting on their feelings when they joined YC. Then we thought about what the youth group would be like in 5 years time. Some of us wanted the future YC to go into teaching the primary level, others wanted more intake of YC members to lessen the workload, some wanted YC to be more technology-advanced and Roy and Jac wanted to start a franchise of 'bunny, rugrats, etc' goods. All of us had a goal to aim for and achieve.

At 2pm, Fr Luke came over to the conference room to give us a private mass. He reminded us to be more Christ-centered (and disclosed that he was not soccer-savvy). And of course, we had the clearing up to do. The clearing up was done rather quickly and after taking a few last minute photos, we broke camp at around 5pm.

All these activities goes to show the importance of each individual's importance to the YM and that all of us matter as we make up a segment that is eventually a part of another bigger segment, and we thank the Lord for this beautiful lesson.

17 December 2007

Camp camp camp!

People starting arriving at 230pm on Friday as they had been tasked to clean up areas that would be used for the camp. However, due to the sudden heavy outpour, several members of the team arrived late and work started only at about 330. By 530, the whole of level 3 of the catechism block had been swept and double mopped with Jeypine. Bunnies started pouring in then and at 6, they all went for mass together.

The camp rules were decided after mass and then dinner was served. Bread and water! Most people took half a french loaf each, and ate in the makan room (room 3-2). Next up was the first session, a session on each bunny's growth throughout the year in various aspects of life (personal, family, community and YC). We copied down questions for reflection and spent the next hour answering these questions and setting targets for these aspects of our lives, for us to achieve in 2008.

At 930, everyone gathered back in Prayer Hall A/B to share. The discussion, led by Gene, Roy and Andre, started with different Y1s sharing on different reflection questions. Different views and opinions with respect to family was brought up when a Y1 shared his targets. Slowly, the discussion developed and we touched on a variety of topics, from the reason we were at camp to siblings and some of the most memorable experiences with our family.

"I held my brother in a deathlock!"

"My brother shaved off the hair on my hand!"

"My brother spent years trying to murder me; he tried the following: explosives, poison, knife and axe throwing.... its a miracle I'm alive today!"

The sharing, unfortunately, had to stop at about 11 after saying the Vespers because we all had to bathe and then sleep in preparation for the next day.

530am Saturday morning, RISE AND SHINE! We all said the Lauds, and then went for morning mass. Breakfast was bread and water, and soon after breakfast, session 2 started. Roy and Jac taught us more about lesson plans, what they actually are and what they are made up of.

Fr Luke came in at 10am, escorted by Terence and Xavier, greeted by a line of catechists and youth cats while the Imperial March from Star Wars played.... the unofficial YC theme song...

He taught us about the different types of prayer and the difference between praying and saying prayers.

"Sometimes, I just want to shake the congregation and tell them to start praying instead of saying prayers!"

He left us with a prayer that we can say anywhere and everywhere.. in our brains, out loud, on the bus, while playing ball..

Lord Jesus Christ,
Son of God,
Have mercy on me,
A sinner.

Next up was.. Whacko! we played a special version of whacko, where instead of saying names, we were to say something about the person who was our target. It helped us to get to know each other better.

Lunch was bread and water, and chicken and olive oil and vinegar, bought by Andre who drove out to get it for us. It was the end of our bread and water fast, a decision that our leaders made after someone raised up the point that we should have been informed beforehand. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed lunch and so returned to sessions in the afternoon happily.

Macro-planning, the planning for events in the long run. The whole camp sat down together to do a plan an event that we're having in January, YC Tea Party! Then each group was allocated a lesson and they created the lesson plan, which was to be presented at night. Three hours was the allocated time, and most groups had extra time. Many people spent the time catching up on their sleep.

We went for anticipatory mass, and then had dinner at Ah Seah. Everybody was given $3 from the camp funds to spend for dinner.. Yum! All gathered back in Prayer Hall A/B at 830pm for the presentations. Each group presented their lesson plan and sort of "role played" their lesson, dealing with difficult kids, kids eating chocolate and kids who talk excessively. Roy and Jac were the critiques and all were subjected to their scrutiny. Topics covered include professionalism, servant leadership, basic teaching skills, the Holy Spirit, and apologetics.

Presentations ended at 11pm and we were given till midnight to bathe and get ready to sleep. Story telling began shortly after midnight.

At 2.40am, Sunday morning, the seniors woke all the bunnies up. It was graduation ceremony! Slowly, one by one, the Y1s were led to the prayer hall and presented with a YC shirt. Daniel and Greg, who sadly will be leaving YC at the end of the year, then shared their thoughts on this cohort of bunnies as a whole. Breakfast was at 4am, and by 5.30am, all had been fed with Changi nasi lemak and had tucked into bed.

12pm. The whole camp was awake and we gathered in the boys' room to play card games. In small groups, we went to meet Roy and Jac who told us that all of us had to go through an interview in the afternoon with them, to allow them to get more feedback and further improve the way things are done, and also for us to clarify any doubts or just talk. The interviews started after a scrumptious lunch of Pow Sing chicken rice, chilli and rose syrup. Chicken rice courtesy of Cassie's parents. Whilst each of the Y1s were being interviewed, the rest stayed in the boys' room to sleep and then everyone woke up and started to play games - Polar Bear and Murderer. Later, some of the Y1s who were done with their interview helped to clean up level 3 of the catechism block.

We ended off the camp with a prayer in the corridor, which signifies that we, as YC, are continually journeying. It was definitely an enjoyable camp with new experiences and memorable moments. Many thanks to Roy, Jac, Gene, Fr Luke, all the seniors, and most importantly! God. (:

Photos will be up soon.

1st EXCO Meeting and Admin Session

Our new EXCO met up for the first time yesterday (1 Dec 2007).

We looked at the year ahead and distributed projects.

Then we met up with everyone else. Each of us spent 1 min sharing about major developments since the pre-lims. Some of the more interesting activities:

1) Eating out can be quite unhealthy, according to Alvin (he and a bunch of YC have vacation jobs at Toast Box @ PS).

2) Amos is finding sem 2 harder than expected.

3) Eugene believes that his classmates are really smart and is finding the competitive spirit in his school a form of positive peer pressure.

4) Clara and Germaine have the uncanny ability to break plates and spill milo.

It was so wonderful to see everyone gathered together again!

Really looking forward to YC Planning Camp 2007. 14th, 15th and 16th December.

Cheers everyone!

For youth cats who have cleared their major exams or are in the midst of semester (Poly and Uni students) there is an opportunity for you to come lend very real support; we need as much and many prayers for the following:

1) Vocations (which means please come for vocation prayer night)
2) Those taking major exams this year.
3) Those getting confirmed this year.
4) YM Camp and YM Christmas thingie.
5) 2008 Y1, Y2 & Catechism Program.

So when our brothers and sisters are studying upstairs, we would be grateful if you could come and spend some time with Jesus in prayer in the adoration room. Please register with the proctor when you come.

Thanks!

*Proctor: someone who supervises students either in exams or in a dormitory.

Hi all!

Please remember to come for Youth Cats session this Saturday 4.30pm at Mother Mary's room. I know everyone's busy, but do set aside some time to say a special prayer for those who will be taking exams in the coming weeks (that amounts to just about everyone, even among the older youth cats). Intercede for each other and let prayer work its wonders... :)

Persevere with the studying, it'll all be over in no time. See y'all this Sat, God bless!

Archdiocesan Youth Rally 2007

070707 was a day of fun-filled activities for confirmands and facils involved. The program kickstarted with confirmands splitting up into their groups and moving off to different rooms. In there, they were required to play a game involving choices. Standing in two rows, participants were asked to choose between two items/events and jump left for the first option, right for the second option. Most of them didn't have any problems picking one option over the other. A handful, however, were seen to use their friends' decisions as a frame of reference... They were later told how choices could be broadly classified into 3 categories: physical/material, social and spiritual choices.

After a fifteen minute break, the confirmands were briefed on the story of Jonah and the Big Fish and returned to their respective rooms. They were then given a short period of time to come up with a pictorial representation to link Jonah's story and the sacrament of Confirmation.

When the clock struck four, hotdog buns and a custard cream puffs were served in plastic bags. When everyone had had something to bite, we all proceeded to the carpark for our ride to the Singapore EXPO. Being one of the earliest churches to arrive, it was wonderful to see the hall slowly fill up with people from parishes all over the island. It was even more heart-warming to see thousands of catholics worshipping in unison when the event began.

The highlights of the youth rally include the screening of World Youth Day 2008 Sydney video (which some of us will be going for next year :D), intimate sharings by Bro. Benedict and Sr. Margaret on how they answered the call to the religious life and the crowd-entertaining play on Jonah and the Big Fish staged by actors from For Heaven's Sake.

The atmosphere in the hall was on a consistent high until the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament which reminded us that worshipping Christ is not all about the highs but the quiet and reflective adoration as well.

TRIDUUM and ConCamp 07

This is a note for all YC members to make an effort to come down for the triduum leading up to our church's feast day.

Dates: 13, 14 & 15 June (Wed, Thurs and Fri)
Time: rosary commences at 7pm, followed by worship at 7.30pm and mass after

All of us will be seated at the right side of the church next to the choir. Please wear something formal as this is a grand occasion. Two of our members will be appointed as lecters for mass; attire for lecters: white top and black bottom. You will be notified if you have been selected. :)

On a separate note, thanks to all the year 1s who volunteered to help out with games and parents' nights during the con camp. Your support is greatly appreciated! Kudos also to the year 2s and above, whom together with members from other youth groups, have worked so hard to plan the camp. God will see all that we have done and reward us accordingly.

In the coming week, please pray that all organizers, session presenters, facilitators and logisticians will have the strength, discipline and wisdom to carry out what is necessary. Please also pray for the confirmands and their parents, that the camp will heal any past/present hurts and that it will be an experience that opens new vistas for their faith journey.

Full steam ahead!!!

Cranium

While three of our yr1s headeed off to study for their last few papers, the rest of us stayed behind in the prayer hall and had a wild game of Cranium! We spread ourselves out according to age such that each group consisted of both old(er) and young(er) people. And yes, we now know that Jules, at a tender age of 22, is the third-oldest member in the group. :)

Group 1:
Roy - Andre - Marissa - Cassie - Marianne

Group 2:
Jac - Geri - Louis - Ivy

Group 3:
Jules - Joshua - Rebecca - Amos

It kicked off with some of us learning how to play the game and the rest of us re-learning the rules. Group 1 was off to a good start, followed by group 2 and group 3 who seemed to be perpetually stuck at the starting point. They soon caught up, however, and were constantly vying for second place with group 2. Here're some other interesting things we learned:
- Ivy has a strange affinity with the colour green
- Cassie is an excellent roll-er (dice, la)
- "Around the world in 80 days" is not a phrase
- Precept = rule/law
- Trans World Airlines Terminal is in JFK airport, NY
- Rebecca can spell backwards very well
- Laptop casing makes for a good and embarrassing blindfold

Winner: Group 1! whose game piece was closest to the big purple brain end-point in the center of the board. [Watch this space for photos!]

For those who're still having exams or who're about to, PERSEVERE! We're all behind you, and so is the Big Boss! :)
